Mike Sanderson, Skipper of ABN AMRO ONE and winner of the 2005-2006 Volvo Ocean Race, was last night named ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year 2006. The Awards Presentation and Dinner took place last night in Helsinki, Finland.
Mike Sanderson, who headed up a two boat campaign sponsored by ABN AMRO, one of the world’s leading banks, earlier this year won one of the worlds most renowned events in the sailing calendar; the ‘Volvo Ocean Race’ with a crew of some of the very best sailors in the world. Not only did the team win the race but they sailed into Portsmouth in May of this year, with two legs left to complete and an unassailable lead. With six of nine offshore victories and five of seven inport race wins it was one of the most empathic victories in the history of the Whitbread Round the World Race/Volvo Ocean Race.
This is just one of Sanderson’s many sailing achievements which also include numerous world records and a mix of crewed and short handed racing, highlighting his place as one of the world’s leading yachtsmen.
After receiving the award Mike commented:
‘I am delighted to have been given this award, there is no doubt that this is the sailing world’s Oscars and to have won is just fantastic – it makes all the grey hairs worthwhile!! However, it was the whole of TEAM ABN AMRO who made this all a reality; the designers, the boat builders, the shore crew, the sailors, the marketing team and our great sponsor, ABN AMRO. Without the efforts of the whole crew and the brilliant sponsorship of ABN AMRO, winning the Volvo Ocean Race would not have been possible.’
