On 22nd July Mike Sanderson joined TEAM ABN AMRO to become skipper of ABN AMRO ONE for the 2005-2006 Volvo Ocean Race.

Sanderson, 33, from New Zealand, is one of the leading all-round yachtsmen in the world today. He has competed in the Volvo Ocean Race on two previous occasions coming first and second, and his focus on total boat performance and development will be instrumental in the campaign. In addition, highlights of Mike’s extensive CV also includes 3 America’s Cup campaigns, a solo transatlantic and most recently as helmsman of record breaking yacht, Mari-Cha IV, which has broken 4 records in just 10 months.

Despite his numerous achievements to date, Mike’s long term aim is to skipper a winning Volvo Ocean Race campaign and that desire coupled with his vast experience makes him the perfect choice to skipper TEAM ABN AMRO.

Mike Sanderson commented:
“I am really excited to have joined the TEAM ABN AMRO. Our campaign is very much up and running and we are already working hard towards ensuring that we can be leading contenders in this great race.”

Roy Heiner comments, "We have the right designer, the right builder, the right boat in the right time, and now we have the right skipper - what more could a technical sailing director wish for...?"
